Under Loch and Key by Lana Ferguson
Romance is admittedly not my favorite genre. I find the plots and tropes predictable, so I don’t read many romance books. But in March, I’ve gone out of my comfort zone and been reading only romance books for a Read-A-Thon fundraiser for Open Books, and to (reluctantly) broaden my reading horizons.
At the beginning of the month, I got a stack of books from the library and began with Under Loch and Key. Given my opinions on the genre, I had low expectations for the book going in. But as I settled into reading, I quickly came to love it!
The story is set in Scotland. A woman whose father recently died returns to his hometown to scatter his ashes. She runs into a tall, dark, and handsome man (à la Outlander) and they immediately start off on the wrong foot. It turns out both have hidden secrets and family histories that are entwined.
I expected this to be a standard enemies-to-lovers story, but there’s much more to it. Without giving away too much, it includes magic, curses, centuries-long family feuds, mystery and suspense, and even encounters with the Loch Ness monster (while still including a healthy dose of spice!).
I recommend this book to anyone who wants an engaging page-turner with the romance of Outlander, the charm of the Scottish Highlands, and the intrigue of ancient legends.
