In Repair by A.L. Graziadei

My local indie bookstore has had In Repair showcased in a display area for a few months. I have glanced at it as I grab for the monthly book club title. Since it was my turn to read and write a review for our newsletter, I asked one of the owners what it was about. She said it was considered young adult fiction, between the ages of 18 and 25, about a young man working through his past during his first year away at college.

YA is not a category I have read even when I was YA myself. The novel had content warnings that I didn’t notice until I went looking for them halfway through the book. The story is a well-written journey of a young man facing the damage created by childhood sexual abuse. In Repair is expertly crafted so that you are compelled to turn each page not because you are watching a train wreck and you cannot turn away, but because you feel his anguish and you want him to heal, to survive and flourish. You care.

It is a difficult read emotionally but worth it. I highly recommend both young adults and older adults to read this book.
